Have you ever wondered if artificial intelligence, or AI, can give you a real estimate of your home’s value? With all the buzz around tools like Grok, ChatGPT, and Claude, it’s easy to think that AI could do it all. After all, AI can analyze tons of data in seconds.

But when it comes to figuring out what your house is really worth, it still has a long way to go.

Why AI struggles with home values. AI is fast and powerful, but it mostly relies on public sources like Zillow, Realtor.com, Homes.com, and tax records. The problem is that these sources often have outdated or inaccurate information. That means the value AI gives you can be way off, especially for unique homes or luxury properties.

For example, I tested a luxury home using Grok, putting in everything I knew about the property. The AI’s estimate was about 35% above the home’s actual value.

If AI were perfect at this, big companies like Zillow wouldn’t have struggled when they tried to buy and sell homes automatically. They lost billions before realizing computers just cannot see inside a house or catch all the details that affect value.

“AI can’t replace human home experts.”

When AI can be pretty accurate. There are times when AI does a decent job. If all the homes in a neighborhood are very similar, like the same size, style, and year built, AI can give a close estimate.

Condo buildings with identical units are another situation where it works well. In these cases, AI can analyze patterns and provide a reasonably accurate number.

But for most neighborhoods, especially high-end or unique areas, homes are all different. Big houses, small houses, and varied designs make it hard for AI to give a realistic price estimate. Factors like the condition of the interior, upgrades, or even things that might not be up to code are impossible for AI to detect without being there in person.

AI is incredible for many things, but when it comes to pricing homes, it’s not quite there yet. If you have asked an AI tool what your home is worth, especially for luxury or unique properties, the number is likely off.

The best approach is to combine AI’s data-crunching speed with the insights of a knowledgeable real estate professional. That way, you get a realistic and reliable picture of your home’s true value.
